THE PENTAGON’S SECRET WORKAROUND TO PDD-60
As my long-term readers know, during the Clinton administration, the government forced the military to accept a total revamp of our nuclear posture by creating an Executive Order PDD-60 (Presidential Decision Directive 60) that prohibits launch on warning and mandated that our nuclear and military forces “absorb a nuclear first strike and then retaliate afterwards.” “With what?” cried Gen Butch Neal of the USMC. That doctrine leaves us only with about half our ballistic missile subs to respond—about 7 subs max since at least half are port at any given time. Even worse, the warheads mounted on those subs are not strong enough to penetrate hardened military targets.
So now the military has come up with a new fuzing mechanism that allows those same warheads to detonate at a much lower altitude, enabling it to destroy hardened targets. This seems to be their new workaround to PDD-60 (which is still secret) and which most military people are unaware of. The article detailing this new fuzing mechanism came out in the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, a vocal part of the anti-military, anti-nuclear lobby.
